What made you want to become a birth doula?

“I wanted to become a birth doula when I was seven years into working as a medical assistant at a Women’s Health clinic in East Portland. I had the opportunity to observe births with midwives and doctors, and I pushed hard to be present for those moments. It was life-changing. During that time, I also witnessed many Portland doulas in action, and I was fascinated by the way they served, supported, and advocated for birthing families. I knew then that being a doula in Portland was exactly what I wanted to do.

Now I can’t think of a better way to be involved in birth work! Supporting mamas, families, and babies during this precious chapter of life lights a fire in me. Becoming a Portland Oregon doula has allowed me to love, advocate for, and care deeply for women—truly seeing them, honoring their strength, and standing beside them as they welcome new life into the world. I couldn’t have dreamed of a better path.”

What would someone be surprised that you do?

“I just picked up running in my adult life! I never thought I would be a runner again after high school but here I am! Have completed a 5k and now working on my 2 10K’s I have coming up later this year! It has given me such a great visual especially when supporting laboring clients as I can encourage and educate on endurance and breathing!

How do you include the partner in labor?

“Including partners is one of my favorite parts of birth work! I teach them how to offer physical support like counter pressure, optimal positioning, breathing techniques. Taking the load off of them also allows them to be emotionally present. Birth can be a powerful bonding experience, and as your Portland Oregon doula, I love showing partners how to stay grounded and supportive in that journey. I also empower them to advocate for their loved one in labor. It’s my job to help them recognize when it’s time to encourage the laboring person rest, food, hydration, or movement.”

What’s one of your go-to items in your doula bag?

Electrolytes and honey sticks. These take up such a small space in my bag but make the biggest difference! Labor is hard work and you should be fueling your body throughout! Electrolytes are so important for athletes, and laboring gammas are no different! As well as honey sticks, you get some quick energy to get through transition or pushing!”

It’s deepened my empathy, strengthened my relationships, and expanded my understanding of birth and parenting. What are some of your loves and interests outside of birth work?

“Working out, coloring, hanging out with 3 cats, hanging out with my husband, baking, and hanging out with family!”

What is included in your labor doula support?

“In my doula support I am a birth and postpartum support so I do both! You can expect my doula support to include lots of education during our prenatal appointments. I will be on call for my clients at 38 weeks until they give birth!

My clients can use this on call time to ask any questions, or talk about concerns about labor or any laboring signs. As their Portland, Oregon doula, I am here for the parents the whole way through. There is no question is silly!

I provide lots of comfort measures when in labor like massaging, candles, essential oils, position changes, etc. I provide postpartum support at the hospital and breastfeeding assistance if desired. If the client wants in-home postpartum doula support I offer that as well. I provide overnight or daytime doula support so parents can get some rest and sleep. As a postpartum doula I take care of your baby, provide education, and bring nourishment and light housekeeping to a new family.”

A real-life client experience with Doula Hannah

“I never had a doula for my first pregnancy. My experience having a Hannah as my doula for my second child was amazing. She made me feel extremely comfortable regardless of the pain from my contractions. I definitely will contact and choose Hannah to be my doula again if I have another pregnancy. Hannah is great!” – Carolyn

“I cannot recommend Hannah highly enough! From the moment Hannah and I met during my third trimester, I knew she was the perfect fit for our family. She joined us after our son was born, covering early morning shifts from 4 AM to noon, allowing my husband and me to get much-needed rest. She handled all the newborn essentials with confidence and care, and her support during my postpartum recovery was invaluable.” – Melissa

“What truly set Hannah apart was her medical background in labor and delivery, which gave us so much peace of mind. Her expertise with newborns was evident in everything she did, from soothing techniques to recognizing our baby’s needs before we even did. Beyond her skills, she became a part of our family—our son absolutely adores her, and we still rely on her for date nights.

If you’re looking for someone who is not only knowledgeable and experienced but also warm, compassionate, and deeply dedicated, Hannah is the one. We are beyond grateful for her and feel so lucky to have her in our lives!” – Lisa
